Surya G. Nurzaman is a Senior Lecturer at the Malaysia campus of Monash Unversity, also known as Monash University Sunway Campus or simply Monash University Malaysia. He obtained his PhD from Osaka University, Japan, in 2011, with the support of the Monbukagakusho scholarship from the Japanese government. Before joining the School of Engineering at Monash, he was a Research Fellow in Osaka University (Japan), ETH Zürich (Switzerland) and University of Cambridge (UK) from 2011 to 2015. Prior to coming to Japan in 2007, he finished his Bachelor and Master degrees in Institute of Technology Bandung (Indonesia), and worked as a technology consultant in Accenture for a few years, accomplishing various projects in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and United States. His research interests include soft robotics, bio-inspired robotics, embodied intelligence and dynamical systems.
Up to date, he has published over forty publications in major peer-reviewed journals and conferences, book chapters, as well as one dedicated book that introduces the emerging field of soft material robotics. He is an Editor in Chief for Robotics Reports, as well as an Associate Editor for IEEE Robotics & Automation Magazine and Frontiers in Robotics and AI. He regularly serves as an Associate Editor for IEEE ICRA and IEEE IROS, and is also the regular publicity or publication co-chair for IEEE Robosoft. He was a corresponding guest editor of special issue on Design Optimization of Soft Robots (2020) and a guest editor of special issue on Soft Robotics and Morphological Computation (2016), in IEEE Robotics & Automation Magazine. He was also the Newsletter Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE RAS Technical Committee on Soft Robotics since it was formed in 2013 until 2021, with currently more than a thousand members worldwide registered in its communication channel, and acts as an advisory board member for the Technical Committee.
He has organized three international workshops, namely the International Workshop on Soft Robotics and Morphological Computation (Monte Verita, Switzerland, 2013), the Myorobotics Winter School & Workshop on Future of Robotics Based on Biological Principles (Cambridge, UK, 2014) and Workshop on Advanced Fabrication and Morphological Computation for Soft Robotics in IEEE ICRA 2017 (Singapore, 2017). Additionally, he was also the Publicity Chair of IEEE Robosoft 2018 and 2019, and served as a program committee member for ALIFE 2014, ECAL 2015, ALIFE 2016 and IAS 2020.
His other contributions to academic society include serving as a reviewer for more than twenty journals in his field such as Soft Robotics, International Journal of Robotics Research, IEEE Transactions on Robotics, Nature Communications and Bioinspiration-Biomimetics, as well as for top-tier international conferences (IEEE ICRA, IEEE IROS, ACC, ALIFE, ECAL, GECCO, SAB and SYROCO). He won an outstanding reviewer award from Bionspiration and Biomimetics in 2019. He has also given invited talks in workshops attached to international conferences (RSS and IEEE ICRA), universities, industry and research institutions in Denmark, Germany, Malaysia, United Kingdom, United States and Singapore.
